Willington Local History Group Summer Visits - 2018

We began our programme of summer visits with a walking tour round Queen’s Park, Bedford, led by Paul and Maurice Nicholson. They brought the area to life with the help of a collection of photos showing how the area used to be. After an interesting walk round, we ended our visit at the magnificent Gurdwara. Our second trip was an evening cruise on the John Bunyan. This proved a popular way to spend an evening with a fish and chip supper and a journey from Priory Marina via the Barns Hotel to Queen’s Park and back. We were entertained by music from Daniel Silson and an interesting commentary from Trevor Stewart. Our final trip took us to Stamford and Burghley House. We enjoyed exploring the historic old coaching town of Stamford with its several churches, shops and beautiful buildings. We then explored the gardens at Burghley House and the dispalay of sculpture there before a guided tour of the house itself. The house was originally built by William Cecil in the 1500s with alterations made by some of his descendants especially in the lseventeenth and eighteenth century. It proved to be a stunning building. Some photos from our visit are on this page. Click on a photo to enlarge it.  For more pictures, click here.
